Here at Design the Planet, we do not advocate littering in any form; however, your trash has potential as being your own brand ambassador!

Think about what a packaging-driven world we live in: from the tags on our clothes to the bags we carry our goods in down to the napkins we toss on our plate after we’re done eating out, the world is rife with disposables in our line of sight. Why not pepper these items with valuable brand information? It’s not just about printing run-of-the-mill flyers – there are so many other ways to project your brand out of the store and into your customer’s everyday lives. Think outside the box!

Some time ago, we produced a client to-go bag (made out of 100% recycled paper, of course) that also included menu information; the customer was able to bring their food home in it, it served as a reminder of all of the delicious menu items, and when they were seen walking around with it, it created a first impression that allowed others to learn about the brand and its offerings for the first time. This was paired with branded napkins, to-go cups, a branded pizza box (we’ve done it!), and even a branded dinner mint!

Though it may be more expensive, why not opt for reusable bags? They trump disposable ones any day, and here’s why: all of my reusable bags are convenient for shopping trips and fit many more items than the average plastic bag. A cool bag will capture strangers’ attention in a way that regular paper or plastic never would. Specialty reusable bags are a great opportunity to play up a hyper-specific aspect of an individual franchise (think city themes, unique location, etc., so clients are encouraged to check out other locations and collect them all).

Whole Foods sells reusable bags featuring themed illustrations of the cities their shops reside in.
