What is a Geofence or (Geo-fence)?
Geofencing is the virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. A geo-fence could be dynamically generated for the purpose of location-based marketing. Picture a radius around a point location on a map. A geo-fence can also be a predefined set of boundaries around a office or region. Businesses use mobile phone GPS location data to engage their audience by sending relevant messages to smartphone users who enter that pre-defined location or geographic area.
Why is Geofencing Important?
Geofencing is the basis for a mobile marketing optimization strategy of geotargeted advertising. When customers opt-in to receiving notifications from apps on their mobile phone, they can receive product offers. Additionally they may receive specific promotions from a nearby store, while inside a store, from nearby restaurants, etc. For brick-and-mortar retail businesses, geotargeted advertising is a great new way to acquire new customers. It may remind customers co come back to that store.

A perfectly designed billboard in the right high traffic location used to be a great marketing tool (and still can be.)
