This proceeded to tell him it is YouTube and that it wouldn’t hurt to have his commercial on the social media website and that it would actually make it easier for us to post the commercial on his website. (Actually a company called U-Tube that owns the domain www.Utube.com sued YouTube for inadvertent traffic causing U-Tube’s web hosting costs to skyrocket to thousands of dollars a month for the influx of bandwidth. Don’t hold me on it, but I believe U-Tube beat YouTube on this one.)

This reminded me of another conversation I had with a prospect back in August of 2008 when he said he wanted to blob on My Face. He was confused with what social media was and that one does not blog (not blob) on MySpace or Facebook. I explained to him the differences in the mediums and after learning more about him and his business, I suggested LinkedIn and blogging. I later blogged about the conversation and the basics of social media on our website. I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading it – There are No Blobs on Myface. (Just a warning, that the blog may be a bit dated now.)

The video giant is now 5 years old. It’s been a busy spring with Facebook hitting the 6 year mark in February. YouTube and Facebook are two of the major players in the Social Media/Web 2.0 movement along with LinkedIn and the nearly defunct MySpace. It is hard to remember a time when the web did not include YouTube. How did we show friends crazy videos, catch up on missed SNL (Saturday Night Live) skits, and waste time for hours and hours before this gentle giant.

You have probably heard of and most likely laughed at the TV commercials sweeping the nation about the “Snuggie” and maybe the “Slanket”. Both products are blankets with sleeves and everyone is talking about them from the morning radio shows to Jay Leno and SNL. YouTube has had over 670,000 hits for the commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xZp-GLMMJ0) and the spoof commercial has over 2 million hits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h05ZQ7WHw8Y)! This is a great example of a simple, million dollar idea through viral marketing and media buzz.

Although culturally unacceptable to some, the Snuggie has hit mainstream society with Snuggies throughout the cold Mardi Gras parade routes just a few weeks ago and now Snuggie Pub Crawls in the north (http://www.snuggiepubcrawls.com). What will be next, that State of the Union with President Obama and Congress in Snuggies?

Last night I recorded American Idol because my wife was in class. When she got home, we sat down to eat dinner and then watched American Idol fill the last 3 spots of the Top 12 contestants. Because of some drama of a certain contestant and long winded responses from the judges the show ran 5 minutes late. Our DVR did not record the extra 5 minutes so we only found out 2 of the 3 moving on. One of our favorite contestants was still waiting on his fate as were 3 other signers.

What to do? We searched some of the mega news websites – MSN, Yahoo, AOL, even American Idols own website. None of those websites will be updated until the next morning. What to do? I searched Google and Technorati looking for a blog, but even the most recent posts did not have who was chosen, just commentary about the performances that night. A light bulb went off in my head and I searched Twitter. Immediately I found out that American Idol ran 5 minutes late and the contestant my wife & I were pulling for was not in the Top 12. He made the Top 13 in a stunning TV moment which again – my DVR did not record. Twitter helped me rest knowing what happened and now I peacefully wait until that TV moment is posted on YouTube so I can watch it myself.
